Pruning That Leaves a Healthier Tree
Tree trimming and pruning is often the reason a removal never becomes necessary. A dead limb taken out in March does not come through a roof in a June thunderstorm. A silver maple thinned and shortened over a garage carries less weight in the next ice storm. Good pruning follows the ANSI A300 standard used across the tree care industry, which Ameren's own line clearance contractors also follow: cuts made just outside the branch collar, no flush cuts, no topping, and no more live growth removed at once than the tree can afford.
What we prune for in St. Louis
- Deadwood: dead branches over roofs, patios, driveways and sidewalks are the first priority, since they fall without warning.
- Roof and gutter clearance: limbs touching or overhanging brick and shingles are shortened so they do not scrape, clog gutters or give squirrels a path in.
- Alley and garage clearance: branches over alleys and garage roofs cut back so trash trucks and cars can pass.
- Weak unions: Bradford pears and other trees with tight, narrow forks can sometimes be reduced to take weight off a failing union, though often this only buys time.
- Crown thinning and raising: selected limbs removed to let light and wind through, or lower limbs lifted over a lawn or sidewalk.
Topping is not trimming
Cutting a tree's top off to make it shorter, sometimes sold as a cheap fix, leaves large wounds that decay and triggers a flush of weakly attached sprouts that break more easily than the original limbs. If a tree is simply too big for its spot, reduction cuts back to suitable side branches, or removal, are better choices, and we will say which we think fits.
Wires and city trees
Branches around the service drop to your house are the homeowner's responsibility, and Ameren Missouri can schedule a temporary disconnect so they can be trimmed safely. Lines on the poles along the street or alley are Ameren's to clear, on a four- or six-year cycle. In the city, pruning a tree in the tree lawn between the curb and sidewalk requires a Permit to Maintain from the Forestry Division, even if you just want a low limb lifted.
When to prune
Late fall through winter is a good time for most trees: the leaves are off, the structure is easy to see, and the tree is dormant. Dead and dangerous limbs can come off any time.
What Trimming Covers
Each pruning job is written up limb by limb or by goal, so you know what will be cut.
Deadwooding
Dead, dying and broken branches removed from the canopy.
Crown thinning
Selected live limbs removed to reduce weight and wind resistance.
Crown raising
Lower limbs lifted over sidewalks, driveways, alleys and lawns.
Crown reduction
Long limbs shortened back to side branches to take weight off a roof or weak fork.
Clearance pruning
Branches cut back from roofs, chimneys, gutters, garages and the service drop.

What Tree Trimming Usually Costs
| Tree height | Published range |
|---|---|
| Under 30 ft (Lawn Love) | $80 to $420 |
| 30 to 60 ft (Lawn Love) | $210 to $790 |
| Over 60 ft (Lawn Love) | $470 to $1,840 |
| Up to 30 ft (HomeGuide) | $250 to $700 |
| 30 to 60 ft (HomeGuide) | $600 to $1,200 |
| Over 60 ft (HomeGuide) | $1,000 to $2,500+ |
National ranges from Lawn Love (2026) and HomeGuide (2026). Climbing over a roof, heavy deadwood and post-storm work raise the cost. Your written estimate is the price.
How It Works
1. Walk the tree with you
We talk about what is bothering you and point out deadwood or weak limbs you may not see.
2. Write the scope
The quote says what will be cut and why, in plain terms.
3. Prune to standard
Cuts are made at the branch collar, with limbs over roofs lowered on ropes.
4. Haul-off and cleanup
Brush is chipped and hauled or left as mulch, and the yard is raked.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How much of a tree can be cut at once?
Industry guidance is to remove only as much live growth as the tree needs, and in most cases well under a quarter of the canopy in one season. Taking more stresses the tree and invites decay and weak sprouts.
Can trimming save my Bradford pear?
Reducing heavy limbs can take weight off a narrow fork for a few years, but the Missouri Department of Conservation notes these trees tend to split under ice and wind as they get large. If yours has already split once, removal is usually the better long-term choice.
Who trims branches near the power line to my house?
The service drop from the pole to your house is the homeowner's responsibility to keep clear. Ameren Missouri can schedule a temporary disconnect at 800-552-7583 so the branches can be cut safely.
Can I trim my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
Generally a homeowner may cut back branches that cross onto their property, as long as the cuts do not damage or kill the tree. Talking with the neighbor first avoids disputes, and we prune to the property line cleanly at a branch union when possible.
