Start by Checking Where the Tree Stands
Tree Removal in Chesterfield depends first on whether the tree is in your yard or in the city right-of-way along the street. For right-of-way trees, the city's Residential Street Tree Program asks owners to call City Hall at 636-537-4000 and request an inspection before doing anything, and only dead, diseased or hazardous trees qualify for removal. When the city is removing ash because of emerald ash borer, it notifies owners by mail first. Trees behind the right-of-way line, in your front or back yard, are your call.
A young city with established neighborhoods
Chesterfield only became a city in 1988, when residents voted to incorporate, but many of its subdivisions are older than that. Today it has 49,999 residents (2020 census) and more than 21,000 housing units across roughly 31.8 square miles, which makes it one of the larger cities in Missouri by population. The trees in its neighborhoods tell that story: the species developers commonly planted in that era, such as pin oaks, sweetgums, maples and Bradford pears, have grown big, and many of them are now crowding houses or failing at weak branch unions.
Bluffs and the valley
The city stretches from wooded bluffs and creek valleys down to the Missouri River floodplain. Chesterfield Valley, once called Gumbo Flats, flooded when the levee failed on July 30, 1993, and Caulks Creek and Bonhomme Creek flow toward the river there. Residential tree work in Chesterfield is mostly up on the higher ground, where homes sit on slopes and wooded lots. On a slope, the direction a tree wants to fall and the direction it should fall are often different, so we rig pieces downhill under control instead of letting gravity decide. Wet clay on a hillside also makes footing and equipment access harder, so after a long rain we may push a non-urgent removal back a few days until the ground firms up.
Common Chesterfield removal calls
- Ash trees in yards that were not treated and are now dead or declining
- Bradford pears that have split down the middle in a wind or ice storm
- Pin oaks with yellowing leaves and dieback
- Trees on a slope behind the house that have started to lean after heavy rain
- Volunteer trees grown up along fences and retaining walls
If you are replacing a removed street tree, the city's program lets owners pick a tree from an approved list for a $100 payment, with the city covering the rest. Planting happens in May and June and again in November and December.

Chesterfield Tree Facts
- Right-of-way removals by inspection. Owners must call the city at 636-537-4000 to request an inspection before an existing right-of-way tree is removed, and only dead, diseased or hazardous trees qualify. For emerald ash borer removals, the city notifies the owner by mail beforehand.
- Street tree replacements. Under the Residential Street Tree Program, owners pay $100 per tree and pick from the approved street tree list. The city's contractor plants 2.5-inch caliper trees in May and June and in November and December.
- The 1993 flood. On July 30, 1993, the levee protecting Chesterfield Valley, formerly Gumbo Flats, failed and the area flooded under several feet of water. The site is now the Chesterfield Commons retail area.
- Size and growth. Incorporated in 1988, Chesterfield had 49,999 residents and 21,306 housing units at the 2020 census on about 31.8 square miles of land.

Chesterfield Questions
The tree between the street and my sidewalk is dead. Can you take it down?
Call the city first at 636-537-4000. Right-of-way trees in Chesterfield go through a city inspection, and dead, diseased or hazardous ones qualify for removal through the program. Trees on your side of the right-of-way are a different story, and we can quote those any time.
My Bradford pear split in half. Is it worth saving?
Almost never. Bradford pears form tight, weak forks, and once one splits the rest of the tree is usually close behind. We remove the damaged tree and grind the stump so you can plant something stronger.
Can you work on a steep back yard?
Yes. On slopes we rig wood down in controlled pieces rather than felling it, and we plan where the stump grinder can safely go. Steep, wet ground sometimes means waiting a few days for the soil to firm up.
