Named for the River Its Creeks Feed
Tree Removal in Des Peres often involves trees growing along the creeks that gave the city its name. The name traces to the River des Peres, French for River of the Fathers, whose tributaries Deer Creek and Two Mile Creek run through town. Trees along creeks grow fast and big, but they also live in soil that floods, erodes and stays wet. That is where we see trees undercut by bank erosion, sycamores and silver maples leaning out over the water, and roots exposed after high water.
A long-standing tree city
The Missouri Department of Conservation's 2018 list of Tree City USA communities named Des Peres among those that had participated for more than 30 years. The city takes its canopy seriously, and so do most residents. When we are asked to remove a tree here, it is usually for a good reason: decline, disease, storm damage, or a tree that has become a real hazard to the house.
The shape of the city
Des Peres covers about 4.3 square miles and had 9,193 residents and 3,298 housing units at the 2020 census. Only 2.8 percent of homes were vacant. With about 760 homes per square mile, lots are generally larger than in the inner suburbs, with mature trees in front and back yards and wooded areas along the creeks. Many properties have trees that have been there longer than the current owners.
When creekside trees need attention
- Exposed roots or undercut banks at the base of the tree
- A lean toward the creek that is getting worse
- Trunk cavities or fungal growth near the base
- Dead tops in large sycamores, cottonwoods or maples
- Debris jams after high water pushing against trunks
Work near a creek takes extra planning. Ground is soft, slopes are steep and equipment access is limited. We often rig wood back uphill to the yard and keep machines on firm ground.
Yard trees away from the creeks
Not every Des Peres call is about a creek bank. Many are about the big shade tree beside the driveway that has been dropping limbs for a few summers, or the ash that went from thin to dead in two years. For those, the decision is the same one we help owners make anywhere: is the tree sound enough to prune and keep, or has decay, dieback or structural damage gone far enough that removal is the responsible choice? We explain what we see, show you on the tree, and put it in writing.
History in the landscape
Des Peres is thought to be the site of one of the oldest European settlements in Missouri, founded around 1700 by French and Kaskaskia people. Settlers of European descent arrived in the 1800s, many of them German immigrants.

Des Peres Questions
The creek bank under my tree is washing out. What can be done?
If the tree is healthy and the erosion is minor, the bank may be stabilized, but that is a job for a stream or erosion specialist. If roots are badly undercut and the tree is leaning toward the water or the house, removal is usually safer. We can assess the tree itself.
Can you get equipment down to a tree by the creek?
Often not, and that is fine. Many creekside removals are done by climbing and rigging, with wood pulled back up the slope by rope to the yard. It takes longer but keeps machines off soft banks.
Is it okay to leave the wood near the creek?
Small amounts of brush can provide habitat, but large logs left in the floodplain can wash downstream in high water and jam against bridges or culverts. We usually recommend hauling large wood out.
Do you leave the yard clean after a removal?
Yes. Brush is chipped, wood is hauled or stacked as you prefer, and the work area is raked and blown off. Your estimate says exactly what cleanup is included.
