When a Tree Comes Down on Something
Emergency storm tree removal starts with a phone call and a few questions: is anyone hurt, is the tree on the house, is a power line involved, and can everyone get out of the doors? Call 911 if anyone is hurt or a line is down and sparking, and report outages and downed lines to Ameren Missouri. Then call us at (314) 668-1571 with the address and what you can see from a safe distance. You can call any time to leave details; storm work is lined up by danger, so trees on roofs and blocked exits come first.
St. Louis storms in brief
The region averages about 48 thunderstorm days a year, and its worst events have been widespread. The derecho of July 19, 2006 brought gusts near 80 mph and left more than 1.2 million people without power, and another storm hit two days later. An ice storm that began on November 30, 2006 cut power to more than half a million Missouri and Illinois customers, some for about a week. The EF3 tornado of May 16, 2025 damaged about 5,000 structures along a 12-mile path from Clayton through Forest Park and into north St. Louis. After storms like these, every tree crew in the area is busy at once, so describing the damage clearly helps us plan.
Why storm-damaged trees are dangerous
A tree resting on a roof is often holding stored tension: limbs bent under the trunk, a split stem still partly attached, or a root plate that could shift. Cutting the wrong piece first can release that tension suddenly. Hanging limbs caught in the canopy, sometimes called hangers or widowmakers, can drop with no warning. We work from the top of the problem down, take weight off the house in controlled pieces, and use ropes, lifting gear or a crane when that is the safer way to lift a trunk off a structure.
Lines, roofs and insurance
We do not cut trees that are in contact with energized lines; the utility clears them first. Once the tree is off the roof, we can leave the trunk and brush for your adjuster to see, or remove everything, depending on what your insurer asks. Photos taken before anything moves are the most useful thing you can give your claim.
What Storm Work Covers
Storm calls range from one hanging limb to a whole tree across a house.
Trees on roofs and garages
Weight taken off the structure in controlled pieces, then the rest of the tree removed.
Blocked driveways and streets
Trunks and limbs cut and moved so cars and people can get in and out.
Hanging and split limbs
Broken limbs caught in the canopy brought down before they fall on their own.
Uprooted trees
Trees tipped over with the root plate up, cut away and the root plate set back or ground.

A look at the trees still standing for cracks, lifted roots and torn limbs after a big storm.

How Storm Calls Work
1. Set up safely
Get everyone away from the tree and any wire. Call 911 for injuries or sparking lines and Ameren for downed lines.
2. Call with details
Tell us the address, where the tree landed, whether it is touching a line, and whether doors or the driveway are blocked.
3. Triage
Calls are scheduled in order of danger, and you hear when to expect us.
4. Stabilize
We take weight off the house or car first and stop there if you want temporary cover put on before the rest.
5. Finish the job
The rest of the tree is removed and cleaned up, with the price in writing.

Emergency Storm Tree Removal Questions
Should I try to cut a tree off my roof myself?
No. A tree resting on a house is often under tension, and a cut in the wrong place can drop the trunk further into the roof or swing it at whoever is cutting. Stay out of rooms under the damage and call (314) 668-1571.
A tree fell from my neighbor's yard onto mine. Who pays?
That is usually a question for both homeowners' insurers. Many policies look at whether the tree hit a covered structure and whether the tree was obviously dead or neglected before the storm. Photograph everything, then call your insurer.
Can you come when a line is down across the tree?
We can come look, but no cutting happens near an energized line. Ameren Missouri or its line clearance crews have to clear or de-energize it first, and then we remove the rest of the tree.
What should I check after a big storm even if nothing fell?
Look for fresh cracks where trunks or big limbs join, limbs hanging in the canopy, soil heaved up on one side of the base, and a new lean. Any of those is worth a look before the next storm.
